WELCOME TO AMERICA

There’s one talent necessary for any K-pop idol that often goes unnoticed: you’ve got to be able to keep a secret. Back in the summer of 2018, when Blackpink were promoting ‘Ddu-du Ddu-du’, they had a visit from Paul Tollett, organizer of Coachella Festival. He flew all the way to South Korea to personally invite the group to play at the 2019 event. Over a period of twenty years, Coachella, which takes place near Palm Springs in California, has become one of the world’s most prestigious festivals, attracting around 250,000 people. Blackpink were not only going to join such stars as Ariana Grande, Janelle Monáe and The 1975 on the bill, but would also be the festival’s first-ever K-pop girl group. And they couldn’t tell anyone for six months!

The news was finally revealed as the group set off for the final leg of their In Your Area tour of South-East Asia, playing sold-out arenas and stadiums in Manila in the Philippines, Singapore, Kuala Lumpur in Malaysia and Taipei in Taiwan. At every concert vast swathes of Blinks, nearly all dressed in black and pink, would light up the hall with their hammer-bong light sticks. For their part the girls went through every set with the enthusiasm of a first performance as they demonstrated their dancing prowess, vocal abilities, amazing costumes, sweet charm and unbelievable stamina.

However, Jennie, Rosé, Lisa and Jisoo are, of course, too much fun for every concert to be the same. They would try out lines in the local language, talk to fans about their city, lead the Mexican waves and have plenty of laughs with each other. In Singapore, Lisa passed her mic to Rosé to finish her rap part in ‘Ddu-du Ddu-du’, which Rosé duly delivered like a natural. The ace vocalist then returned the favour, making Lisa finish her high note, which she also performed impeccably, like the pro she is.

At the end of each performance fans and the members would come together, all joining in an emotional rendition of ‘Stay’, which had now become the Blinks’ anthem. At this point the Blackpink girls came to the front of the stage to interact with the fans, talking to some and pointing out or even collecting their favourite posters and banners. In Manila, Rosé noticed a fan holding a plushie that had her baby photo over its face. ‘This is so cute,’ she squealed. ‘You guys are so creative.’ Fans then revealed plushies with the other members’ baby faces on them and to everyone’s excitement the group posed with their ‘baby selves’ at the front of the stage.

In between the Manila and Singapore concerts, Blackpink made their US debut in a whirlwind but memorable trip. As they flew out to LA on 7 February 2019 Blinks made sure that #HereComesBLACKPINK was trending at the very top of the worldwide Twitter rankings. The girls didn’t have much time to explore, but made time for a shopping trip to Santa Monica. ‘It was supposed to be
